You Can't Spell Classy Without G.O.P.

Remember Jim Gibbons? The Nevada Republican Governor who hid his illegal nanny in his basement, allegedly made a drunken pass at a cocktail waitress in a parking garage, and supposedly took kickbacks from a defense contractor when he was in Congress? That one?

Well, the good Governor has been back in the news lately. His wife Dawn filed for divorce, kicked him out of the Governor's mansion, and filed papers against him complete with exhaustive, seedy detail. They've since agreed to share the mansion and the guest house, but there may also be an ex-playmate involved somehow.

Anyway...

Long story short, John McCain was asked by a Nevada pundit the obvious but necessary question of why he didn't choose Governor Gibbons to chair his Nevada campaign. Via Tapper:

"I appreciate his support," McCain said. "As you know, the lieutenant governor is our chairman."

Why snub the governor? Ralston asked.

"I didn't mean to snub him,. I've known the lieutenant governor for 15 years and we've been good friends," McCain said. "I didn't intend to snub him. There are other states where the governor is not the chairman."

Maybe it's the governor's approval rating and you are running from him like you are from the president? Asked Ralston in a question McCain clearly found loaded.

Said McCain, chuckling, "And I stopped beating my wife just a couple of weeks ago."

Yeah.

As Tapper notes, McCain was referencing the now-cliche joke question "When did you stop beating your wife, senator?"

But, you know, still.

Tempest in a teacup (2.00 / 1)

It is a prime example of McCain putting his foot in his mouth. I know others will disagree, but I don't see THIS as being a huge issue.

Yeah attack him on his stance on Choice, equal pay, calling his wife a cunt. Be concerned about his leaving his wife for a rick replacement....

Lot of reasons to not trust McCain on issues concerning to women (and men)... this however?  meh

Agreed. Apparently it's a slow blogging day.

Well, no one's saying that the comment is going to single-handedly sink McCain's campaign. On the other hand, it was really dumb.

Well that is nothing (none / 0)

Actually, that is nothing from McCain, according to an article in the NYT last February,

"On a flight from Burlington, Vt., to Warwick, R.I., on Thursday, Mr. McCain volunteered that Brooke Buchanan, his spokeswoman who was seated nearby and rolling her eyes, "has a lot of her money hidden in the Cayman Islands" and that she earned it by "dealing drugs." Previously, Mr. McCain has identified Ms. Buchanan as "Pat Buchanan's illegitimate daughter," "bipolar," "a drunk," "someone with a lot of boyfriends" and "just out of Betty Ford.""

Re: Tempest in a teacup (none / 0)

I agree with you, I don't think this is a big issue.  But what gets me is that if Obama said this or something similar I would bet that all hell would be breaking lose right now.  The same is true with the numerous bone-headed things that have come out of McCain's mouth as of late.  The double standard (imposed by McCain's beloved base...the media) is infuriating.

Re: Tempest in a teacup (none / 0)

I tend to agree, but that may be because they have so little to attack him on. Whereas McCain just presents a whole treasure trove of possibilities.

Re: Tempest in a teacup (none / 0)

That is good and bad for Obama. The fact is that Obama gets about 50% more news coverage than McCain.  Obama is a rock star and if he does anything it is news. McCain does not  have that kind of celebrity.

McCain is a decent man, more or less (2.00 / 1)

Give the guy a break.

Anyway, he'll lose because he's WRONG on every major issue.

If we're hoping that the foot-in-mouth disease will help decide this election, then heaven help us.  Democrats are not immune either.

Give him a break? (none / 0)

The Republicans jump on every slip the Obamas make. If there was no slip, they make it up. Should McCain be held to a lower standard since he already called his wife a c---?

Follow up question (none / 0)

HAS McCain ever beaten his wife???

Seriously, someone should look into that...

He's certainly called her all sorts of names...

What about his ex???

This scandal and the changing demographics of Nevada hopefully make the Gov. race competitive when Gibbon's is up for re-election.

Re: You Can't Spell Classy Without G.O.P. (2.00 / 1)

He really does have the lowest Governor's approval rating in the country I believe. I haven't found one person yet who says they support him. Our state assembly leader really layed into him yesterday with his crappy leadership in the budget crisis we're going through leading many to believe she'll run in '10

Re: You Can't Spell Classy Without G.O.P. (none / 0)

Actually thats a pretty funny joke.  Women won't find it humorous, however.  Obama is obviously targeting women in this campaign, so I am sure it made him smile as well.

Did McCain stop calling his wife 'cunt', 'trollop' (none / 0)

yet?

Just wondering.

Re: You Can't Spell Classy Without G.O.P. (none / 0)

This is a funny joke. Making a deal out of it is stupid. Is this the best we can do? I'm embarrased that progressives are trying to make a point out of this.

Every moment we waste attacking something irrelevant like this, we're not talking about McCain's continuation of Bush's policies.
